Cardiac HealthScreen session:
We
record your heart's electrical
rhythm and rule out atrial fibrillation,
an uncontrolled and ineffective beating pattern which can lead
to blood clot formation in the heart. The danger of these
clots is that they can be pumped from your heart to your head
which can cause a stroke.
We measure your blood
pressure to rule out hypertension (high blood pressure) which
results from the force of
your blood pumping through your arteries. There are many
causes of hypertension though often the cause for a particular
person's high blood pressure are never known. However, the
harmful effects of long-term and untreated hypertension are
well-known. The only way to know if you have hypertension
is to have your blood pressure checked. That's one reason hypertension is
commonly known as the 'Silent Killer' since there typically are NO
SYMPTOMS.
Ultrasound
imaging uses high-frequency sound waves (sound high above the range of human
hearing) to view the heart. We take pictures of the heart chambers and valves,
measure chamber sizes and heart wall thicknesses, measure the pumping capacity
of the heart, and look at the blood flowing through the heart valves and
chambers. These images and measurements allow us to evaluate for a great variety
of heart diseases and abnormalities, both congenital (present at birth) and
acquired (developed with age, through heredity, or through external sources).
